Community Team Member Highlight: Georgia Rackley

Georgia crossing the finish line at the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon

Hometown: Harrisburg, PA

Occupation: “Professionally, I am a nurse and work as a consultant with a health care consulting firm.”

How Long Have You Been A Hope For The Warriors® Team Member?

“I joined the team two years ago and am excited and honored to make this my third year.”

How Did You Hear About Hope For The Warriors®?  What Inspired You To Join The Team?

“I had been running the Marine Corps Marathon for five years as part of a team for autism research (my younger son has an autism spectrum disorder) but when my older son became a commissioned officer in the Army on graduating from college, I wanted to support a military cause.”

“Although there are several military charity partners affiliated with the Marine Corps Marathon, I researched them through Charity Navigator and Hope for the Warriors® emerged as one of the best in terms of the scope of their programs and the low administrative and fundraising costs. I was not at all surprised but also impressed when Hope for the Warriors® obtained the 4 star rating from Charity Navigator. I want to know that monies raised will get to those who need them.”

What Has Been Your Favorite Race You Have Ever Ran? Why?

“Every race has its special memories but one comes to mind.   Despite having completed several marathons, and half marathons, I had never done a 5K race so I ran our local Armed Services Day 5K in May 2012.   I never win any races because I am slow and basically aim to just finish-but several days after the race I checked the race results online and found I had won in my age group!  I had to laugh-there are some benefits to getting older and running-the competition lessens!”

What Is Your Favorite Thing About Being On The Team So Far?

“Being able to personally meet some of the service members who have benefitted directly by the work of Hope for the Warriors®.  It makes it all worthwhile.”

What Races Did You Run In 2012?

Harrisburg Armed Services Day 5K
Harrisburg Half-Marathon
Marine Corps Marathon

What races Are On Your Radar For 2013?

“I will definitely do the Armed Services Day 5K , a half-marathon as it fits so well into the marathon training and of course the Marine Corps Marathon.”

Have You Always Been A Runner? Who Or What Inspires You To Run?

“I used to run years ago before I had children.  Then years passed with only running after my children.  In 2004 my younger sister talked me into doing a marathon.”

“I knew however that I would not run for myself-that if I was going to put in the effort it would be for a good cause and at that time my son with autism was presenting enormous challenges so I naturally wanted to support a group focused on autism.”

“Since joining Hope for the Warriors the inspiration to run is all about honoring my son and the thousands of service members and their families who make enormous sacrifices.  I am a proud Blue Star mother so I see myself running on behalf of my very large military family.”

“My son was wounded in a grenade blast in Afghanistan in 2011.  Fortunately, his injuries were not disabling but this incident made me all the more aware of and sensitive to the needs of wounded troops and their families and families of the fallen.”

What Song On Your Running Playlist Do You Have On Repeat Right Now?

“I have a very eclectic playlist to suit all types of runs-I try to keep things diverse to fight getting in a rut.”

What Motivates You During Your Long Runs?

“Besides the personal benefits from running, hands down, my source of motivation is thinking about my son and other service members.   When my son was deployed, it kept me from any whining too-especially during the summer when some of the runs were incredibly hot and the moment I found myself complaining in my head I would simply think of my son and the troops in the 110+ degree heat with 70+ pounds of gear and all discomfort disappeared!”

“My son who is with the 101st Airborne out of Ft. Campbell returns to Afghanistan this spring-which will give me all the motivation and inspiration I will need heading into the next marathon.”

How Did You Hear About Hope For The Warriors®?

“My wonderful friend Jenlene accepted a job with Hope For The Warriors®.”

Joelle and Jenlene at the 2012 Philadelphia Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon

What Inspired You To Volunteer With Team Hope For The Warriors®?

“Jenlene was a big part of the inspiration to volunteer at my first Team H4W event, but contributing to the organization’s mission and vision is what keeps me coming back.”

What Has Been Your Favorite Event You Have Volunteered For? Why?

“There have been a lot of great ones, but the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon stands out in my mind.  That was my first major event with Hope For The Warriors® and I came away from it totally inspired: by the Hope For The Warriors® staff, my fellow volunteers, and the veterans and other athletes who pushed themselves that day to meet goals some might not have thought were possible.”

What Is Your Favorite Thing About Volunteering With The Team?

“This may sound selfish, but volunteering with Team Hope For The Warriors® always makes me feel significant.  When I show up for an event, I know that I will be put to important tasks, and treated as if I’m part of the organization’s staff.  The goal at an event is always maximizing the experience for the Team members participating, but I feel like I come away with just as much as they do.”

What Races Did You Run In 2012?
Salvation Army Kettle Classic 5K
Lawyers Have Heart 10K
Philly Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon (as a Team member)
Honolulu Marathon (as a Team member)

What Races Are On Your Radar For 2013?

“None yet as my knees heal from the Honolulu Marathon, but if nothing else this year I’d like to do a half marathon or triathlon in the fall.”

Have You Always Been A Runner? Who Or What Inspires You To Run?

“I started running in high school, but never really appreciated it until I was out of school.  A handful of people close to me run, and they definitely serve as an inspiration on days when I feel like being lazy.  On the other hand, the freedom and peace I feel when it’s just me and the road are an incredible motivator.”

What Song On Your Running Playlist Do You Have On Repeat Right Now?

“Hmm – on the treadmill, I’ve been known to hit repeat on the remix of Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good””

How Did You Hear About Hope For The Warriors®?

I heard of Hope For The Warriors® from my close friend who is a New York City Firefighter and has run with the Team before.”

What Inspired You To Join Team Hope For The Warriors®?

I had seen the Team at the Tunnel to Towers 5K New York City Run, and there saw the impact the Team had in terms of fundraising and motivating those running.  I also wanted to associate myself with a great organization to raise money for and to keep me motivated in my training. You realize there are people that make a choice and a sacrifice to defend this great country, and how it important it is to look after them when they need us the most.  It was an amazing feeling to watch my donation goal met in 20 minutes when I sent one email and Facebook message.  I know I still have work to do, and am motivated every day to meet and beat my goals.”

What Has Been Your Favorite Race You Have Ever Ran? Why?

“Tunnel to Towers 2012.  What did it for me was in the tunnel, running alongside wounded warriors, who ran like they had no injury or handicap, and the reaction from the other runners.  The “USA” chants echoed through the tunnel, and I still get chills thinking about that moment where you get out of the tunnel and run through the firefighters and police officers on both sides holding photos of those lost in 9/11.  You realize you are running to honor a man who ran that path to save the lives of others, losing him in the process.  For me, it put a lot of things into perspective, how fragile life is and how important it is not to waste time, and to help others.”

What Is Your Favorite Thing About Being On The Team So Far?

“The Team itself has just been so positive with me in terms of email correspondence, keeping me motivated, as well as making me really feel part of the team.  Pride has been instilled, and it really makes me work hard in my training so that I can race to the best of my ability.”

Have You Always Been A Runner? Who Or What Inspires You To Run?

“I played football in college for 2 years, and never considered myself a runner. I have lost over 90lbs since last year.  I had to make life changes because I wasn’t happy and did not want to have health issues. It was from my friends and family having the courage to tell me that I needed to lose weight that I finally looked at myself and realized I could do it.  Went on a strict diet, saw a nutritionist, and watched the weight fall off.   I would have to say my sister motivated me to run, she got me on couch to 5k and I trained for my first 5k.  It was during that run, that I wanted to quit, and just walk, and then I saw a man running with crutches and a prosthetic.  I realized then and there, that I did not have it bad, and removed words like quit and can’t from my vocabulary.  I went from a 5k to a 10k, to a 15k to my first half-marathon last week. I am inspired by the progress I have made with my personal weight loss goals, and the feeling I get after I complete a race.  I have to say it’s a great feeling when people tell me how great I look as I continue to lose weight, but it’s important I stay grounded as I still have not reached my goal and want to avoid becoming complacent.”

What Song On Your Running Playlist Do You Have On Repeat Right Now?

“Alter Bridge- Metalingus.  While I listen to pretty much anything, this one song gets me absolutely fired up, and is my go to on the Nike run app when I need a pick me up.”

What Motivates You During Your Long Runs?

“Times and distance are clearly important as you can keep beating goals.  I also keep my before photo, to remind myself of where I have progressed, and how these runs keep me from going backward.”
