Training Tip From The D.C. Road Runners!
Ziploc Baggies

Ziploc baggies?!  As a training tip?!  In fact, Ziploc baggies are your friend on training runs. You can carry an extra pair of gloves and hat in a Ziploc baggy during the run – keeping them dry should you need a bit more warmth. Just squish the air out of the Ziploc for a nice, flat bundle and shove it in a pocket. And if you carry a cell phone during a run in the rain, placing the cell phone in a Ziploc baggy keep your phone safe and dry. (By the way – a corollary to this tip is to place a wet phone in a Ziploc baggy full of uncooked brown rice to help dry it out.  The rice will absorb the moisture.)

Team Hope For The Warriors® Team Captains: Cristian Nunez and Steve Bartomioli

Team NYC Captain Cristian Nunez (pictured right) with Warrior Team member Len Lacina
"My name is Cristian Nunez, I am the Military Relations Coordinator for Hope For The Warriors® New York office. I am also an Army Reservist. I am honored to hold the title Team Captain for the Team Hope For The Warriors® community Team here in New York City. Representing an organization that supports our nation’s heroes is nothing less than inspiring and I look forward to running alongside other supporters."

Team NYC Captain Steve Bartomioli

"My name is Steve Bartomioli and I am from Westchester, NY. I am truly excited to be a part of Team Hope For The Warriors® NYC. I see this as an opportunity to grow and expand relationships with Team members in the Tri State area. The whole goal is to raise awareness and strengthen the community so we can do more to accomplish our main objective; which, of course, is, to take care of all of our service members and their families!"

Team Hope For The Warriors® Okinawa Team Captain: Amanda Eason

Team Okinawa Captain and Warrior Team member Amanda Eason at the 2012 Marine Corps Marathon

“I have to be honest it’s hard for me to put into words why I am so excited about being a Team Captain. Hope For The Warriors® did so much for me and continues to check up on me after I was injured in 2010. Granted my injures never really held me back, I had some missing vision in my right eye that I gained control after going through therapy to help with balance.”

“You meet other wounded warriors that have given so much of their own. This is my way of helping support wounded warriors and being able to give back is moving emotionally. Starting a Team here in Okinawa allows me to express the importance of helping wounded warriors to be able to gain control and motivation back into their lives.’’

“I am very excited to get Team Hope For The Warriors® Okinawa started mainly because it is a great organization that is willing to go above and beyond for wounded warriors. I love being able to get people involved with such a great organization that is dedicated to our warriors that have gave so much for our beloved country.”

Being the Tampa Team Captain allows me to be more involved, invite people to join the running and Dragonboat teams, put together teams at local races, and exposing Hope For The Warriors® to the Tampa area. Team Hope for the Warriors® Tampa has gained lots of exposure and excitement since April when we had a Dragonboat Team compete in races.  Since that time I have had numerous requests for information.  We are taking a team to the Run for the Fallen in September and the Marine Corp Half Marathon in Jacksonville in October.  We are also participating in two Dragonboat races coming up; September 28, 2013 in St. Petersburg and November 16, 2013 in Lake Hernando.”

Training Tip from the DC Road Runners!

How To Stay Cool During Hot Summer Training

STAY ON SCHEDULE

WHY?! According to a study in the July 2009 Journal of Sports Sciences, when cyclists recorded their plan for hydrating during workouts—including exact times and amounts—they drank more frequently and consumed more fluid mid-workout than their non-planning peers. "Planning helps people remember how much and when they need to drink," says lead author Martin Hagger, Ph.D., of the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom.

DRINK UP

Note your thirst during your runs, and write down how often and how much you drink. Review your notes to help you plan when to drink. Set your watch to beep every 15 minutes as a reminder to consider your thirst. Drinking smaller amounts at regular intervals can help you absorb fluid more effectively and avoid stomach sloshing.
